Somehow Hunter is adopted by another family, and Katie finds him in Paranormal Activity 4, at which point Hunter is 6 years old. In Paranormal Activity 2, Katie kills her own sister, Kristi, and abducts Kristi’s son, Hunter. It shows that other mothers were being marked too and that a fully-possessed son is supposed to be a soldier for the coven. Marked Ones moved this plot forward by an inch. With characters Katie and Kristi, the possession was hinted to be a family debt, but their purpose was to facilitate the demonic possession of a son - Hunter, the first male to be born in their line. The overall franchise story is that a coven of witches that has the same Illuminati symbol as Alcoholics Anonymous has been making demonic compacts, allowing malevolent entities to possess human bodies. ![]() If Christopher Landon has a filmmaking gift, it is not in directing quality horror. Its only moment of potential redemption was in its plot climax, which was edited poorly and failed to manage its characters realistically, making it somewhat comedic but not at all novel or engaging. And of course, just like the last two Paranormal movies ( 3& 4), this one lowered the cognitive demands on the audience, which means fewer or no scenes that require people to pay attention to benefit from supernatural effects. It also played into obvious tropes, like having someone block the camera and, “oh, surprise,” a dark figure is in the background when the person unblocks the frame. It didn’t even bother with misdirection work, like having the scare come from the periphery of the camera’s focus. It followed -old- horror movie conventions, like bringing the camera directly to the place from which someone/something will jump. I’m not even sure that he should be allowed to write screenplays anymore, much less stories. ![]() It may be possible at this point to say that he should be taken off of the franchise. This is Christopher Landon’s second major directorial work, and his fourth Paranormal writing contribution. In this one, director/writer Christopher Landon does a bored copy&paste job of classic horror tropes within the found footage style, coloring very much within the lines to create a movie which took no mental effort to make and which accomplished nothing.īranching tangentially from the continuity of the Paranormal franchise, this one’s plot centers around the character of Jesse (Andrew Jacobs), who discovers that he has been marked and will be one of many conduits for a demon army. The Paranormal Activity movies aren’t getting better, but they -are- getting worse. “Paranormal Activity: The Marked Ones” (2014) Movie Review
